The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a highly important biological system to maintain and establish human health balances found within our bodies.
The ECS has the bodily function of regulating many physiological processes we use daily including appetite, pain management, memory and mood.
The ECS was only discovered in 1992 by researchers and it was established that our bodies produce their own endocannabinoids, the first of which discovered was cannabinoid called Anandamide.
Professor Raphael Mechoulam of Israel first isolated the THC cannabinoid in 1964 which led to the discovery of the ECS.
It took scientists and researchers almost a further 30 years to discover that cannabinoid receptors are located in the brain and body.
Researchers discovered the ECS by looking at how marijuana and cannabinoids such as THC and CBD is affecting humans bodies and minds.
CBD’s Indirect Effects on the Endocannabinoid System
They determined that endocannabinoids and its receptors found in our bodies are very similar to the cannabinoid compounds found in the cannabis and hemp plants.
Scientists discovered that this ECS system produces its own cannabinoids, therefore, they called it endocannabinoid system.
Endo- meaning inside the body.
And Exo- meaning outside the body.
The main task of endocannabinoid system is homeostasis- nurture and regulate internal process to maintain a balance between overall health and critical bodily functions.
CBD and Cannabinoid Receptors
If your bodily homeostasis is lacking, it will lead to your internal biological life to suffer, and therefore lead to unwanted illnesses and disease.
Scientists found two endocannabinoid receptors in the human body – CB1 found in the brain and CB2 in the immune system.
These receptors have been stimulated by naturally made cannabinoids in our systems namely anandamine and 2-AG (2arachidonoylglycerol).
Phytocannabinoids are substances made by plant cannabis sativa that can stimulate cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2).
Dr Dustin Sulak and his colleagues have helped more than 18,000 patients using medical marijuana with a great diversity of diseases and symptoms. Most of his patients agreed that cannabis helps their conditions and illnesses which include cancer, epilepsy, Crohn’s disease, multiple scleroses, chronic pain, insomnia amongst many more. This is due to the similarities of cannabinoids produced by the ECS and the cannabinoids produced by cannabis. Many studies have shown that by supplementing our system with cannabis we can treat and alleviate many different illnesses and medical conditions.
What first comes to mind is the popular true story of the cannabis strain Charlottes Web. This strain was developed by the Stanley Brothers to help people like Charlotte, a girl who was born with the Dravet syndrome.
She was having more than 300 epileptic seizures a week and mostly conventional medicine did not work.
This strain developed specifically for her has a high profile of the cannabinoid CBD and successfully treated little girl. Now she has only a few seizures a month and she now lives a far better quality of life. The Stanley Brothers are well-known cannabis and cultivators based in Colorado, United States.
